Course curriculum

Course modules & syllabus

A comprehensive breakdown of every subject area covered during the training. All modules are taught in English with study materials provided.

Philosophy & Principles of Yin Yoga

The Taoist roots of Yin Yoga and the fundamental approach to passive practice.

  • History of Yin Yoga: Paulie Zink, Paul Grilley and Sarah Powers — lineage and evolution
  • Yin vs. Yang: the spectrum of practice — active/passive, heating/cooling, dynamic/static
  • Taoist philosophy: Wu Wei (non-action), the Five Elements and the flow of Qi
  • Why poses are named differently in Yin: functional vs. aesthetic approach
  • The three principles of Yin: appropriate edge, stillness and time (3–5 minutes)
  • Mindfulness in Yin: using stillness to cultivate deep inner awareness
Fascia & Connective Tissue Anatomy

The science of fascia and why it — not muscle — is the target of Yin practice.

  • The four types of stress in yoga: compression and tension in bone vs. soft tissue
  • Fascia: structure, function, piezoelectricity and the importance of hydration
  • Myofascial chains: the seven fascial meridians and yoga asana correlations
  • Why muscles are not the target in Yin: engaging bones, ligaments and joint capsules
  • Skeletal variation: how individual bone structure limits or allows range of motion
  • Finding your edge: compression vs. tension as the limits in each individual body
Traditional Chinese Medicine & Meridian Theory

TCM's Qi and meridian system mapped to Yin Yoga postures.

  • Qi (Prana) in TCM: what it is, how it flows and how stagnation causes illness
  • The 12 principal meridians and their organ associations in Chinese medicine
  • The 5 Elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water — seasonal and emotional connections
  • Yin organ meridians: Liver, Kidney, Spleen, Heart, Lung and Stomach
  • Mapping asanas to meridians: which Yin poses target which energy channels
  • Key acupressure points activated by Yin postures and their therapeutic effects
Core Yin Yoga Postures & Sequencing

30+ Yin postures with full instruction on entering, holding, exiting and sequencing.

  • 30+ Yin postures: Caterpillar, Butterfly, Dragon, Shoelace, Sleeping Swan, Dragonfly, Saddle
  • Entering, holding and exiting — safe transitions and rebound (integration time)
  • Prop use: blocks, bolsters, blankets and straps for support and comfort
  • Lower body Yin sequences: hips, inner thighs and spine — Kidney/Liver/Stomach meridians
  • Upper body Yin sequences: shoulders, neck, chest — Lung/Heart/Pericardium meridians
  • Seasonal sequences: Five-Element-based classes for each season of the year
Pranayama & Meditation in Yin

Integrating breath and meditation practice into the Yin hold experience.

  • Integrating breathwork into Yin holds: natural breath, Ujjayi and soft Bhramari
  • Mindfulness during Yin: body scan, noting sensations and releasing resistance
  • Yoga Nidra as a Yin closing practice: rotation of consciousness after long holds
  • Chakra meditation in Yin: visualising chakras during targeted hip and spinal poses
  • Loving-kindness (Metta) in Yin: cultivating compassion during discomfort
  • Yin and the nervous system: parasympathetic activation, vagal tone and stress relief
Teaching Methodology for Yin Yoga

How to design and deliver a Yin class — cueing, silence and holding space.

  • Structuring a Yin class: theme selection, sequencing by meridian or anatomy
  • Cueing long holds effectively — how to teach without filling every moment with words
  • Using silence as a teaching tool: giving students space to go inward
  • Language for sensation: distinguishing appropriate sensation from pain or danger
  • Props and assists in Yin: safe use of blocks, bolsters and hands-on adjustments
  • Teaching diverse students: inflexible beginners, hypermobile students, older adults
